Fossil Free Farming

Not a new concept at all, to farm without a dependancy on machinery powered by fossil fuels as gasoline or diesel. This indeed was the way it was before the invention of engines and giant farm factories. ....... Early man used just his hands to farm and then discovered tools to aid in the cultivation of crops. The techniques developed over the years and animals were pressed into service as larger areas were being cultivated. Horses and oxen were introduced to the plow to clear new ground. The benefit of their manure to aid crop development was an unexpected side benefit. There are still an number of farms in North America and beyond that have never seen fuel powered machinery. Some sects of the Amish or Mennonites may make use of the employment of horse drawn implements to assist in the heavier aspects of farming. Some smaller farms rely solely on people power. Banning Fossil fuels from today's farms is a concious decision to limit the size of areas under cultivation and a return to what is looked upon as a more natural method of raising food without either the contamination of fuel, oil and associated pollutants. http://www.chefs-garden.com Farmer Lee Jones on storing vegetables for the winter without using fossil fuels.
